About Christopher
As principal of Empower, Christopher draws on his 25 years of strategic communications, media relations, and political campaign management experience in the non-profit, public, and private sectors.
A prominent community advocate, Christopher has served as a board member with a number of organizations including: the Boys and Girls Clubs of Toronto (including Chair), the Four Villages Community Health Centre, and as founding Chair of Green 13, a community environmental group. Christopher is also a frequent media commentator on public policy issues and has written numerous op-ed articles for major Canadian newspapers.
Concerned with reduced civility in the public discourse, its effects on civic participation, and other challenges to democracy in Canada, Christopher has responded by launching several initiatives. In 2011, he created Civil Election to encourage federal election candidates to sign a pledge to promote civil discourse. During the 2015 federal election campaign, he produced a report based on a national survey of civil society organizations, "Poisoned Discourse". The report generated significant media coverage and public discussion, and resulted in an invitation for Christopher to meet with international election observers from the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe. In 2021, in the days following the attack on the US Capital, Christopher launched Civil Dialogue, drafting an open letter to the Prime Minister and opposition party leaders calling on them to take steps to protect and strengthen democracy in Canada that was signed by nearly 40 civil society organizations and leaders.
Christopher has a BA in Political Science from the University of Toronto and was nominated for the Rodrigue-Pageau Scholarship for academic excellence and community involvement while attending the University of Ottawa.
